Taking a tree down should be the last option, not the first. Plenty of trees that look like a problem just need a crown reduction or a prune, and if that’s the case we’ll tell you, because it costs less and keeps the tree. Some are past saving though: dead or dying, storm damaged, riddled with fungus, leaning over the house, or grown far too big for the garden they’re in. When a tree is dangerous, or the roots are getting into drains and foundations, removal is the sensible call, and you’ll get a straight answer from us when we come out to quote.
How the tree comes down depends on the space. Where there’s room to drop it whole, a straight fell is the quickest and cheapest way to do it. Most gardens don’t have that room, so we climb the tree and dismantle it in sections instead, roping and rigging each piece down under control so nothing lands on the fence, the shed or the borders. We’ve taken six old elm trees out of one customer’s back garden, so a big tree in a small space doesn’t worry us.
Before anything is cut we check for Tree Preservation Orders and conservation area status. A TPO’d tree needs a council application approved before any work, and in a conservation area the council needs six weeks’ written notice, so we sort that paperwork with you rather than leaving you to work it out alone. Once the tree is down the wood is yours if you want it: logs cut to length and stacked for the burner, or the lot chipped and taken away. Tree Removal FAQs
Sometimes. If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order on it, the council must approve an application before any work happens. In a conservation area, any tree with a trunk wider than 75mm at 1.5m up needs six weeks’ written notice to the council. Dead and dangerous trees have exemptions, but you need evidence before you cut, not after. We check all of this as part of the quote and handle the paperwork with you.
It depends on the tree and the access. A small tree with room to fell it whole can be down and cleared in a couple of hours. A large tree that has to come down in sections over a garden takes most of a day, sometimes two. We’ll give you a realistic timescale with the quote so you know what to expect.
Your choice. If you want firewood we’ll cut the trunk into logs and stack them wherever suits you. If not, the branches go through the chipper and the timber is loaded and taken away, so you’re not left with a pile to deal with. The stump stays in the ground unless you ask us to grind it out, which we can quote for at the same time.
Yes, that’s exactly what sectional dismantling is for. Rather than letting anything fall, we climb the tree, cut it into manageable pieces and lower each one on ropes, swinging them clear of the glass. It takes longer than a straight fell, but nothing comes down that isn’t under control.
It shouldn’t. We plan where everything lands, lower the heavy sections rather than dropping them, and carry the wood out instead of dragging it across soft ground. On a big removal you might get some flattened grass where we’ve been working, but that recovers in a few weeks. Ruts and gouges are the sign of a rushed job, and you won’t get them from us.
