Partington sits on the south bank of the Manchester Ship Canal, about six miles from our Stretford base, out past Carrington on the A6144. The town grew in two bursts: first around the coaling basin the Ship Canal brought in the 1890s, then again after the war, when Manchester built overspill estates here to rehouse families from the inner city. You can read that history in the streets. Victorian terraces line Manchester Road and Warburton Lane, the post-war estate fills the middle of town with roads named after counties, Cheshire Road, Lancashire Road, Kent Road and the rest, and newer houses have gone in off Oak Road. Most of the gardens are modest, and the everyday work reflects it: hedge cutting, tree felling where a conifer has outgrown its corner, stump grinding to get the lawn back, and boundary trees that have grown far too big for a small plot.
Carrington next door is where the big change is coming. The old petrochemical works closed in 2007, and the New Carrington plans will put around five thousand new homes on the land between the two towns over the coming years. Beyond the works the ground stays flat and open: Carrington Moss to the south, the meadows along the Mersey to the north, with the river passing Carrington on its way into the Ship Canal.
